GRAND AVENUE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION INTERN
  

The Grand Avenue Business Association Internship Program provides an excellent opportunity for students interested in communications, public relations, marketing or event planning. The intern must positively represent Grand Avenue Business Association’s objectives and will gain practical experience in marketing Grand Avenue and events.

 
Applications are being currently accepted for Fall/Winter 2010.
 

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible participants must be at least 18 years of age and reside in Minnesota. Preference will be given to those possessing strong communication and organizational skills.  The candidate need not be from a non-profit background.

 

SELECTION

DUTIES

Specific duties of the intern vary each year depending upon new issues and marketing objectives, but could include:  writing marketing pieces, VIP relations, sponsor relations; assisting with activities during events; involvement in promotions and research; assisting in future intern recruitment; and providing GABA staff support, including various office duties. Intern will work 15-25 hours per week.

 

 


INTERN PROGRAM

 

Background

 

This internship program is designed to adapt to the changing event industry and retail market.  The Grand Avenue Business Association (GABA) is a non-profit 501-C6.  GABA's mission is to preserve Grand Avenue's unique urban tradition and hometown character while fostering cooperative relationships with businesses, government and the community at large.

 

Objectives

This Program…

1…..provides an outstanding young adult the opportunity to positively represent and work on behalf of GABA in order to advance Grand Avenue’s image.

 

2….provides a challenging, educational, and rewarding opportunity for a young person to gain a practical education about the function of business, specifically the marketing and general promotion of Grand Avenue. 

 

3…..generates assistance (human resources) to implement GABA’s program of work.

 

4…..introduces potential future employees to GABA and positions the association as a potential future employer to interns and candidates.

 

5….generates constructive input about the organization’s programming and operation, specifically about the internship program and its potential value for upcoming years.

 

6…..builds awareness in the community of Grand Avenue and City of St. Paul as an organization that offers interesting and rewarding career opportunities.  It also allows the association to build rapport with academic leaders who may lend assistance/recommendations when the association fills professional positions.

 

Position Description

 
Term/s:   some flexibility is allowed

Fall – September through December

Spring – January through June

Summer – June through August

 

This experiential learning opportunity is a short-term employment. The intern will not be eligible for any benefits other than those provided to all employees under applicable law.  The intern will set up a work schedule with the executive director – estimated time will be 15-25 hours/week. 


 

Responsibilities

1.    Assist with writing, development, and production of promotional pieces for events.

2.    Conduct interviews and gather information for use in Grand Avenue Business Association publications.

3.    Assist in the planning and implementation of promotions and other consumer promotional events.

4.    Assist with the logistics of events.

5.    Assist with day-of needs for events. 

6.     Perform miscellaneous administrative and clerical functions.

7.     Perform other tasks as assigned.

 

Relationships

1.     Directly responsible to and reports to executive director.

2.     Works under the direction/supervision of the executive director and program director.

 

Reporting

1.     Weekly reports on programs/projects will be given to executive director.

 

Compensation

1.    Workers compensation and liability insurance during employment.

    

Requirements

The Intern Must…

1…..be a student that currently resides in Minnesota.

2…..be at least 18 years old on January 1, 2010.

3….be available for short-term employment of the Grand Avenue Business Association through internship term, including event days (For 2010: June 6, August 1, October 24 and December 4).

4…..have an interest in event planning, communications, marketing or public relations.
5…..certify availability and participation in short-term summer employment.

 

Additional Skills/Requirements

1.     Excellent communication skills, including writing and public speaking.

2.     Strong organizational skills, maturity and the ability to work independently.

3.     A background or interest in marketing or event planning.

4.     Computer experience.

 

Application Process & Other Provisions

 

1.    Although the association anticipates the internship will last through the term, no selected intern is guaranteed to have his or her internship last for any period of time.  The association reserves the right to end the internship of an individual at any time for any reason.  Agreement by an individual to participate in the internship does not constitute a contract or guarantee of employment.

2.    The association reserves the right to discontinue the program if no qualifying applications are received as determined by the association or for any other reason.

3.    Family members of Grand Avenue Business Association directors or management-level staff are ineligible for consideration unless a special exception is granted by the GABA board.
